ATTN SAFN MEMBERS: Plan and submit your sessions for the joint 2024 American Anthropology Association Annual Meeting in Tampa Florida. The time has come to start planning and submitting sessions for the annual AAA meeting. The meeting will take place on November 20-23, 2024 in Tampa. The theme is Praxis

SAFN’s AAA Program Committee and Executive Board look forward to putting together a great program for our members – but we need your help. Please begin organizing your oral presentation sessions, roundtables, conversation sessions, interviews, and podcasts! Here is a description of submission types.

Submission Timeline:

  • The General Call for Participation will open Wednesday, March 20 and close Friday, April 26, 11:59pm ET

Invited and Co-Sponsored Sessions

We will consider all sessions submitted to SAFN for Invited status. We have frequently co-sponsored sessions with related sections such as Culture and Agriculture. We would welcome any suggestions you might have for co-sponsorships, as these tend to increase the audience size and diversity of interests.

Organizing sessions vs. individually volunteered papers

This year, AAA is not accepting individually volunteered papers. Instead, they encourage utilizing AAA Communities and the SAFN listserv, and this panel organization table to organize sessions or find sessions for individual contributions. SAFN has compiled a list of potential panel topics to facilitate session organization. Interested members can contact SAFN for assistance in connecting with others. It’s important to note that panels must be formed independently and submitted through the AAA portal, as SAFN will not be collecting individual papers for grouping into panels as in previous years.

  • Transforming food systems: praxis for sustainable agriculture and social justice
  • Diasporic foodways: theorizing new directions in culinary encounters
  • Sovereignty, solidarity, and activism in alternative food movements
  • Identity as praxis: food and the politics of authenticity and heritage

Participation Rules

A reminder that you will need to be a member of AAA and register for the meeting in order to present at the Annual Meeting. Also, individuals can only present one major (Presenter) role plus one secondary (Discussant) role per meeting. There are no limits on minor roles (Organizer/Chair). Submission details can be found on the AAA meeting website’s Submission FAQs— but please feel free to reach out to us if you have questions.
